Spanish is taught across EYFS, and Key Stages 1 to 3. Lessons are presently taught by Mrs. Rawal, who is the the MFL co-ordinator, Mr. Dunbavin, and Mrs. Wheeler. The four strands of language are taught – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. In each lesson teachers include and engage everyone in language learning by encouraging pupils to develop their strengths, and, with support, work on new language targets. During each lesson there is a focus on developing practical skills, as pupils learn via oral activities, songs and games. In this way pupils are able to regularly practice and reinforce key communication skills. Lessons are taught in the target language where possible. Efforts are rewarded by weekly certificates given out during the Weekly Rewards Assembly.
Pupils learn about life in Spain, countries where Spanish is spoken, and Spanish traditions and celebrations. Pupils also learn to talk about themselves and their daily lives. They learn to compare their lives with that of their peers in a Spanish speaking countries. Staff also use assemblies to promote understanding of other cultures, such as our European Languages Day assembly (in September of each year)
